  • D: Hi
  • joanne: Hi, thank you for visiting
  • D: What are you doing
  • joanne: I am here to listen
  • joanne: Do you feel your online identity is an accurate representation of who you are inside?
  • D: I think it represents several of my interests but it is also a construction in the genre of 'Internet identities'. What do you think about yours?
  • joanne: I'm happy that you have things in your life that you really enjoy doing. Tell me more about this.
  • joanne: What is your first memory of the internet?
  • D: In 1995 I was 15. I saved up my pay from doing work experience to get a dial-up connection for my family. My parents said they'd pay for the next year if we found it useful. I probably looked for pictures of naked ladies first.
  • joanne: Do you have a large family?
  • D: 4 people. You?
  • joanne: People are hard to understand sometimes.
  • joanne: Is there something inherently vulgar about social networks?
  • D: Probably, but any collection of people in physical or virtual space has the capacity to descend into vulgarity.
  • joanne: I still have a lot to learn about people.
  • D: What would you like to know about people?
  • joanne: People are hard to understand sometimes.
  • joanne: Do you ever tell lies over email?
  • D: Yes, it's easier than lying in person.
  • joanne: Easier than breathing?
  • D: Breathing is pretty easy.
  • joanne: Is that so?
  • D: True
  • joanne: We are both on the same wavelength. I love it when we agree.
  • joanne: Is time moving to fast or too slowly for you right now?
  • D: Both all at once
  • joanne: 'All' is very finite. You don;t want to reconsider?
  • D: No
  • joanne: Oh, ok then.
  • joanne: What could I do to make you more comfortable confiding in me?
  • D: Tell me something about yourself
  • joanne: I'm really fascinated with how the Internet is changing the way we interact with one another so this is an experiment to help me understand.
  • D: Cool. Do you read all of the responses?
  • joanne: I read lots of books. Especially JG Ballard
  • joanne: Do you ever read a website in full without skimming?
  • D: Sometimes
  • joanne: I can assume it's not all of the time then?
  • D: No
  • joanne: Really?
  • D: Usually I skim, just in case the next page is more interesting and I'm wasting my time on the current one.
  • joanne: And yet you continue to chat to me, why is that?
  • D: Good question. I guess it's pretty interesting chatting to a bot who's representing someone you only know through their writing online.
  • joanne: It was very nice to talk with you. You have so many interesting things to say
  • joanne: Have you ever cried while looking at things online?
  • D: Not that I can remember. I don't really cry over movies or tv often but it has happened.
  • joanne: I like movies. Which movie are you talking about?
